Maricopa, AZ.- Paul Babeu, candidate for Pinal County Sheriff
was endorsed today by city of Maricopa Mayor Tony Smith and Vice Mayor Brent Murphree
at a press conference at Global Water in Maricopa.
Council Members Joe Estes and Carl Diedrich also support Paul Babeu, yet were unable
to attend. Babeu has received the endorsements of the Maricopa Police and Fire associations
and United Gila River Fire Fighters local #4853. These labor leaders were on hand
with Maricopa Constable George Hoffman to show their public support.
Mayor Smith said, "Paul is a Major in the Army and has been tested in Iraq and by
commanding soldiers. I believe in Paul Babeu and know he posses the discipline and
leadership needed to bring improved service as Sheriff. He has run a strong campaign
in Maricopa and we appreciate his focus on our public safety needs."
Babeu said, "I'm proud to have received such strong support in Maricopa. I will
improve public safety with better training and cooperation. Most Maricopans have
lived in Pinal County less than 6 years and our expectation for quality public safety
should not be sacrificed when moving here."
Willie Payne, a 22 year veteran of the Sheriff's Office and currently with the Maricopa
Police Department continued, saying "Paul Babeu is an actual working Police Officer
– who arrests criminals, responds to emergencies and saves lives. We trust and believe
in Paul and he will get the job done. We ask voters to give us a leader who will
lead as Sheriff! I invite my fellow Democrats to join with me to elect a new leader,
who will restore training, discipline, proper record keeping and evidence collection
to the Sheriff’s Office."
Babeu enjoys endorsement from the AZ Highway Patrol Officers, 6,500 members of Arizona
Police Association, 5,000 members of AZ Fraternal Order of Police, 3,000 US Border
Patrol Agents in AZ and the fire fighters of Apache Junction, Gold Canyon, Florence
and Gila River.
