Babeu names Chiefs to Pinal Sheriff's Office

December 15, 2008

Sheriff-Elect Paul Babeu
Honest…Independent…Accountable

Florence, Ariz.– Sheriff-Elect Paul Babeu announced his selection for the two top positions for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO). Babeu named Chandler Police Lieutenant and Pinal County resident Steve Henry as Chief Deputy of Law Enforcement Operations and AZ Dept. of Corrections Deputy Warden James Kimble as Chief Deputy of Adult Detention.

Steve Henry named as Chief Deputy of Law
Enforcement Operations for Pinal County Sheriff's Office

Chief Deputy Steve Henry

Henry currently serves as Traffic Section Commander for the Chandler Police Department. He has served as acting Patrol Watch and District Commander. As a Sergeant, Henry served in Bicycle Patrol, Neighborhood Services, Patrol and in SAU/SWAT in charge of deployment and tactical decisions in high risk Police incidents. Henry has also served as an Internal Affairs Investigator and Special Enforcement Detective. Henry earned his Bachelors degree in History at Arizona State University and received his Masters of Education from Northern Arizona University. Henry served active duty with the US Air Force and US Army, where he later became a commissioned Army Officer.

Henry has numerous awards and unit citations. Most impressive is Henry’s Medal of Honor, where as a Patrol Sergeant, he and one of his Patrol Officers entered a burning Chandler home and rescued 9 people who re-entered their home to save their belongings. Henry and the Officer crawled into the home and exited through windows, as flames and smoke engulfed the home. All made it out alive and were treated for smoke inhalation. Henry is active in his church, coaches little league baseball, tackle football and youth soccer. Henry and his wife Sally live in the unincorporated Queen Creek portion of Pinal County with their three children. Babeu said, “I have worked directly with Steve Henry and know him to be an exceptional leader. He is a no nonsense manager who is widely respected by his peers for his performance and high integrity.”

James Kimble named as Chief Deputy of Adult
Detention for Pinal County Sheriff's Office

Chief Deputy James Kimble

James Kimble currently serves as Deputy Warden of the Central Unit of Florence Complex, which houses medium and maximum custody prisoners. Deputy Warden Kimble is responsible for the daily operations of the 1,161 bed facility and 315 full time employees. Kimble also developed and negotiated two provisional out-of-state private facility contracts for the care and custody of 2,064 Arizona DOC inmates.

Kimble and his wife Jodi relocated to Arizona from Illinois, where Kimble started his 17 plus year corrections career in the Joliet Correctional Center, where he was named Correctional Officer of the Year. He promoted through the ranks and became Assistant Superintendent of Programs and Operations of the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles, a medium and maximum security facility for juveniles. Kimble earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Law Enforcement with minors in Psychology and Security from Western Illinois University. He is a member of the American Correctional Association and is certified with the Correctional Administrators Academy.

Babeu said, “James Kimble has implemented new security procedures that have enhanced the security, safety and operations for all staff. His experience in contracts and his outstanding performance in corrections is just what we need for our jail operations.”

Babeu said, “When I assume office, I will be flanked by two accomplished professionals who will help me lead from the front. Together, we have been given a great opportunity to serve and to make a positive impact in the safety of our families. Currently, the sacred trust law enforcement holds with the public has been damaged. We will restore discipline and bring professionalism to rebuild that trust.”

Babeu noted that other members of his leadership team shall be named in the future. He concluded by saying, “Many changes are coming to the Sheriff’s Office and we shall never conduct business as usual. Our focus is to implement improved training, use of current technology and ensure accountability from the top down. A breath of fresh air is coming.”
